The otherness that Owens markets as unique as it might seem to foreigners who struggle with him at the airport have shifted his concert into one of the greatest passports at Paris Fashion Week. Today Cher dropped in just as the music was beginning, but the people-watching still abounds. “They’re a relief,” he said because you notice them and you think, ‘Oh, there are other opportunities.

With the sunshine shining down on the Palais de Tokyo and the spray going full angle, those opportunities began sliding down the marble stairs. Owens’s fabrics this season were amazing. The sheer stretchy latex look of the opening pieces? Cowhides ordered from the food industriousness are regaled with natural glycerin to give them their suppleness and light quality, like modeling thick fruit roll-ups, the presentation notes explained. The spliced lines of the voluminous numerals at the end were lacquered denim. From space, they might have been eel.

Equally as singular is what Owens did with those materials: draping sinuous dresses with vestigial sleeves like furled wings and long trailing hems, exaggerating the arches of the shoulders of jackets up to and past the chin, creating odd, yet compelling volumes. The ancient Egyptians considered the scarab a sign of renewal and rebirth, which is relevant. Egypt is a county Owens likes well enough to have lifted his travel ban earlier this year. He named this show Edfu, after a temple on the west bank of the Nile.

A Rick Owens show is always a moment to be appreciated, and nothing less was desired for his Spring/Summer 2023 runway at Paris Fashion Week. Often examining gory lines immersed in sexual motifs along with locks and glamor, the Dark Lord himself never dissatisfies and has held his background as one of the most expected designers on display season after season for over a decade.

For Spring/Summer 2023, Owens is back at Palais de Tokyo, this time bringing to the great outdoors to show his womenswear collection, “EDFU.” The drama began from the off, with Machine Gun Kelly, Cher, Michèle Lamy, Erykah Badu, Tyga, and many more in attendance, each seating in front of the Palais du Tokyo.
